QUARTER 1: THE AMERICAN DREAM
REFLECTION ON THE QUARTER 1 THEME
The American Dream are people coming and living in the United States to work hard in order to become successful. " It should not require 80-hour workweeks." You should not kill your self in order to achieve the American Dream. Gatsby had nothing and worked really hard to achieve everything he had, but Gatsby knew he didn't achieved the American Dream because he wasn't marry to Daisy Buchanan.

QUARTER 1 COLUMNIST RHETORICAL ANALYSIS REFLECTION
Richard Cohen is a columnist writer for the Washington Post. Cohen's style of writing to persuade his audience through the use of logos. Cohen states facts in order to give knowledge to the audience, so that they can believe and connect with him.

QUARTER 1 NOVEL: THE GREAT GATSBY
I agree with the author perspective because sometime people have everything they need but they are not satisfy which unfortunately the person does something bad and they end up regretting.

JEFFERSON- STANTON COMPARISON RHETORICAL ANALYSIS ESSAY
For the next formal essay I will focus on analysis because then I can create a strong essay, there needs to be strong analysis to show comprehension.

FAVORITE QUARTER 1 40-MINUTE TIMED WRITE
This speech given by John F. Kennedy shows many rhetorical devices used. Therefore, this is a good example and good use to break down a rhetorical analysis.

QUARTER 1 REFLECTION
I honestly like reading the Great Gatsby because it show us how back in the day what American Dream meant. I am looking forward to how to make the best essay ever. Trying to catch every detail that author write which support the main idea.

QUARTER 2: IDENTITY, RACE, AND CULTURE
Quarter 2 Novel: Their Eyes Were Watching God

In “Their Eyes Were Watching God” by Zora Neale Hurston, symbols were used to enhance the theme of gender. For starters, Janie’s hair type was emphasized throughout the novel and represented her youth/empowerment. Janie was forced to walk to the direction of adulthood, leaving behind her adolescence. All her failed relationships allowed her to grow and learn more things about herself just like her hair. Her hair isolated herself from others, it showed her strength as a woman.
Joe Starks symbolized cliché gender roles. Janie was hidden under his shadow and arrogant masculinity. He constantly belittled Janie with the excuse that women were destined to only do housework and to fulfill his needs with no questions asked. He silenced her voice, shrunk her position in society, while also lowering her self esteem. Joe’s character displays how back in the day women were degraded to generally showing how agonizing it was.
Hurston uses the setting in order to depict slavery during that era. Therefore, the setting took place in the southern states of the United States.

Quarter 2 Synthesis Formal Paper & Synthesis Paper Refelction

Researching is difficult because you have to always make sure that your sources are reliable. I am confident that all my sources are reliable because they are mainly from our in and out of class readings. Also, I used sources from the SIRS catalog provided by PGCPS. Through this research, all my evidence does support my argument. I am actually comfortable using a visual source because it gives the audience an image to analyze and to comprehen. Having the visual source was also my favorite part.
Learning the MLA format was difficult. There are many rules and its hard to keep up with it in order to make sure it’s correct. The only thing that throws me off was the citation because there are certain rules.
The easy part of writing a synthesis essay was writing my thesis and my introduction paragraph. The challenging part was analyzing the evidence. There are evidence that have deep meaningful thoughts to it. The easiest part was my counterargument and rebuttal because I got to use a personal anecdote.
Quarter 2 Reflection

In Quarter 2, I learned how to write a formal synthesis paper. That includes citations and MLA formatting. I did not know what those were at first, but when writing a synthesis essay it is important to have counterarguments and rebuttals. Although I was already familiar with the concept, I never actually used them in an essay before. Writing a formal synthesis essay was something new to me.
